Can I unzip a .GZ file? Q: I am having trouble unzipping .GZ (zipped Postscript) files. Can The Unzip Wizard unzip .GZ files? A: .GZ (and .Z) files are files that have been compressed under the LINUX (Unix) operating system. LINUX is an alternative operating system to Microsoft's Windows. The Unzip Wizard can only unzip ZIP files. Although both are categorized as "compressed" files, a .ZIP file and a .GZ file are not the same thing. It is very unusual for a Windows user to be in possession of a Unix file. To uncompress a .GZ file, you need to use gunzip (which is a symlink to the gzip command that comes with most Linux installations). But if you are a Windows user, then this "tip" will not be of much help, since gunzip only is found on a Linux computer. |
